This project began with a modest 4-meter wide terrace in the heart of Darlinghurst, which was transformed from a dark, compartmentalized space into a modern residence that aligns with both the grandeur of period furnishings and the owners’ personal aesthetic. The original structure, having been altered by previous owners, featured ill-conceived additions that disrupted the home’s visual harmony. By removing these outdated renovations, reconfiguring the floor plan, and extending the terrace at both the rear and the upper levels, we were able to create more generous living spaces and add a new ensuite bathroom and a large balcony to the attic space.

The design successfully reflects the distinctive tastes of each client while seamlessly blending old-world charm with contemporary sensibilities. Retaining the essential character of the period home facilitated an easier negotiation process with local council authorities, ensuring that the project adhered to heritage guidelines while embracing modern living ideals. The outcome is a compact yet luxurious home that provides a surprising level of comfort and functionality, demonstrating that thoughtful design can create an unexpectedly refined living environment within a modest space.
