NorthBridge Horizon

The contrasting contours of the walls and window openings are an interesting design solution that added graphic to the interiors of this Madrid apartment in Madrid and set them to an eclectic mood.

Description

A large, vacant site directly across from the iconic Northbridge sandstone suspension bridge presented a unique opportunity for a luxury apartment block. Developments under the North Sydney DCP pose challenges, and this project was no exception. In addition to the client’s brief to maximize unit numbers for profitability, the design had to address the site’s steep topography, proximity to the heritage bridge, and issues such as traffic noise, off-street parking, and strict council and BCA compliance.

The design features seven three-level split units, including one adapted for a person with disabilities, showcasing a distinctive fan shape that adds character. Geometric patterns and overlapping materials result in a balanced apartment block that is both harmonious and unique.

Each apartment includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an open-plan living and dining area that opens onto a generous terrace overlooking a beautiful garden and parkland, with the historic bridge in the background. The site was excavated to provide two levels of much-needed parking and storage for each unit. Complex engineering ensured the architectural integrity was preserved, while the external finishes: a blend of timber panels, face brick and cement render create an eclectic look that will age gracefully.
